Probably not what you want to hear but I use Tremclad. It doesn't hold its shine very long but it sticks well.
I have a set of grungy turbine style Trans Am wheels for my $300 S10 beater. Has anyone painted aluminum wheels with any success? I thought a coat of bright red on the "background" part and a polish job on the shiny rim and spokes would look cool,. but not if the paint flakes off in a month or so. One of the wheels has gold paint in this area already, flaking off too, off a different car, so they don't match right now. I was planning on using a can of Hi-Visibility International Distress paint like they use on aircraft wingtips and such so it should stick to aluminum.

I think the key is in the prep and anything will stick.Probably alot of work with a good scotchbrite pad and a good degreaser before paint.A guy could even use some adhesion promoter.
I agree, a good cleaning/degreasing and the appropriate primer for whatever paint you choose and you should be good.
One thing I would do with the paint is thin the first coat 50%, second coat 75% and third coat 90%. One thick coat will chip easier than 3 thinner coats.
Try some Brightside Yacht paint...nice and bright, smooth and shiney self leveling and has it's own special primer. Made for foam brush application.
(Harper's Marine has it)
Well, I painted my extra wheel that was already painted gold from the factory, the others are natural metal. It looks like crap, so I guess I'll just polish the others up and use 'em as is. Thanks for the input, people.
Black VHT bar-b-q paint.
When ya gonna paint it?
